Volunteering

Service is a cornerstone of the medical profession. Thus, AMSA provides chances for members to contribute to the community and to learn about the health profession through the volunteer opportunities we provide.

Events Spring 2008

14th annual Eggster Hunt and Learning Festival
Date: Saturday, March 15th from 8am-4pm
Location: North side of the Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB)
Volunteer Job: Host a special booth with fun learning activities to teach kids about nutrition and the importance of a balanced diet.
Cause: To help raise money for children from disadvantaged homes or children with disabilities.

107.7 The Bone Rocks Radiothon for Kids
Date: Saturday April 12th from 11am-2pm
Location: Children's Hospital Oakland - Outpatient Center, 744 52nd Street, Oakland
Volunteer Job: Phone bank and help with set-up and logistics.
Cause: To raise money and awareness for the Oakland Children's Hospital & Research Center.

UC Berkeley RELAY FOR LIFE 2008
Date: Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 10:00am until Sunday, May 4, 2008 at 10:00am
Location: Edwards Stadium (on Bancroft)
Volunteer Job: Join team AMSA and take turns walking or running laps in the fight against cancer!
Cause: Help raise money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society.

Devil Mountain Run 2008
Date: Sunday, May 04, 2008 6:00 a.m.-12:00 noon
Location: Downtown Danville, CA on Railroad Avenue at Prospect near the Museum of the San Ramon Valley at the restored Railroad Depot.
Volunteer Job: Course Monitor, Registration or Refreshments.
Cause: The oldest continuous running event in the East Bay where all proceeds benefit the Children's Hospital & Research Center Oakland.

* indicates we're bringing AMSA service entertainment to the seniors that day!

Come hang out with other AMSA members and the residents at the nursing home. Activities include doing an organized project wit the residents, maybe playing catch or reading to them. Great way to serve the community and learn about a different aspect of patient care.

AMSA Events in Fall 2007

Chaparral House: Every 1st and 3rd Sunday
AMSA members volunteered on a regular basis at the senior nursing home doing organized activities with the residents such as playing catch, baking, reading to them, etc. It was a great way to serve the community and learn about the different aspect of patient care.

Foster Care:
AMSA volunteered during monthly trainings and support groups for foster and foster-to-adoptive parents. We tutored and looked after the children during the two hour groups.

Berkeley Project: Oct 27, 2007
Thousands of Cal students came together on this annual one day service working together with our community partners at over 40 project sites all over the city of Berkeley. AMSA specifically volunteered at the North Hill site cutting down and removing French Broom and other weeds to help prevent future forest fires.

Homeless Food Drive: 11/20/07, 11/21/07, 11/22/07
This was AMSA's 3-day Food Drive for the Homeless during the Thanksgiving holiday. AMSA members collected foods from local stores and restaurants on day 1 and 2 and made 49 full to-go boxes which were delivered to the homeless in Berkeley on day 3.

Teddy Bear Drive: 12/10/07-12/14/07
Helping the Mortarboard, a senior honor society, with their annual Teddy Bear Drive! AMSA members donated stuffed bears along with custom made holiday cards which were delivered to the Oakland Children Hospital for the holiday!
